For Those on a Budget...
1. Ink the deal
Mark the occasion--literally!--by getting inked together. But forget elaborate snakes and professions of love on a dagger--which would kill the budget (not only now, but in 20 years when you're getting them removed)--and opt instead for a small symbol like a heart or initials where only the two of you can see.
2. Go au naturel
Get your libido going with some fresh air! Start off with a (free!) hike or bike ride through some of your town's best paths. (Check out the website canadatrails.ca for some great ideas.) Just stop off at the grocery store en route for some picnic accoutrements and you're all set.
3. Switch up your foreplay
Whether it's your first or your 10th, anniversary sex is always hotly anticipated. Make it a year to remember with a little 9 1/2 Weeks action. Start off with a bowl of melted chocolate, buy a couple of brushes from any craft store, and create Picasso-like works of lickable art on each other. Kink, food and a couples bubble bath to get clean? Lather, rinse, repeat!
4. Recreate your big day
Proposed at a lake in the throes of a sunset? Married on a sunny beach? Recreate these memories with a few key essentials: Sand, candles and flowers can all be found at reasonable prices. Look for mood-setting sunset or ocean DVDs to play in the background as you nibble on a dessert from your special day.
Revisit your innocent beginnings, when silly and carefree was the order of the day. A fifty will keep you in wave pools, mini-golf courses, arcades and roller/ice rinks--not to mention your fill of hot dogs and pop--as long as you have the stamina.
6. Go vintage
Themes are always fun, and vintage is in vogue. Mix the two and create a '50s-themed date à la Pleasantville, celebrating the simplicity of love. Think a trip to an authentic diner, sharing a milkshake, and an evening at the local drive-in for a double feature and some good old-fashioned back-seat play.
7. Clink it
Love a good Shiraz? Or slurping a fine Cabernet? Toast your coupledom--and all the memories you're making together--by finding bottles of wine from the year you met, the year you got engaged or the year you were married.
8. Race each other
Lead your partner through a literal trip down memory lane with an Amazing Race-style romp around your city. Use meaningful sites (e.g. the location of your first kiss) and scavenger hunt-type clues (e.g. "Find the CD of the band from our first concert together"). The major cost here is time, so prepare well ahead, and do a dry run to see if it all works according to plan.
1. Create a lasting impression
Gifting a nude portrait of yourself for your love nest is a sexy anniversary idea that will keep those fires burning for many anniversaries to come. Check out Edmonton's A.M.T. Photographic (from $99; amtphoto.com) or Maverick Photography in Toronto (from $250; mavphoto.com).
2. Get high
Glacier Air's helicopter tours will give you an exhilarating bird's-eye view of snow-capped peaks and lush forests along the Squamish Valley and over the glaciers (from $280* per person; glacierair.com) or try a glacier landing. In Ontario, National Helicopters Inc. will leave you breathless over Canada's most famous (and romantic) falls ($139; nationalhelicopters.com). (*Prices subject to change.)
3. Play his game
When it comes to relationships, no one likes games. But an Agresti Ebony Multigame Chest from Birks ($3,295; birks.com) appeals to the trickster in all of us. Treat your favourite game boy or girl to this multiple game set, which features polished ebony leather handles, a crystal top and 170 poker chips, dice, cards, backgammon, chess and dominoes.
4. Be her Mr. Big
If your lady dragged you to one of the Sex and the City movies, you know how a walk-in closet can make her squeal with desire. Give your gal her very own Carrie Bradshaw moment with a fancy space for all her most cherished—and lacy—things. Try Canterbury Woodworks in Halifax (from $1,500; canterburywoodworks.com) or Komandor in Toronto (from $500; komandor.ca).
Ever wonder what it would be like to have a swanky penthouse? An anniversary is the perfect time to play A Day in the Life Of. The four-star Cosmopolitan Toronto Centre Hotel and Spa (cosmotoronto.com) is urban chic at its best, with penthouse suites from $1,500 a night.
6. Get wild
It's called glamping (glam camping), but we call it heaven: Sexy safari escapes with luxe abodes. South Africa's &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve (from $3,460 per person; andbeyondafrica.com) features glassed-in bedrooms with wildlife views, while Rockwater Secret Cove Resort (from $219 per room; rockwatersecretcoveresort.com) boasts chic "tenthouse" suites in B.C.
7. Have a ball
Make his sports fantasy a reality with killer seats for a can't-be-beat view of some MLB action. Score "in-the-action" seats to see the Toronto Blue Jays--you'll actually be on the field to catch Wells, Hill and the rest of the boys in action (from $210 per ticket for in-the-action seats; toronto.bluejays.mlb.com).
8. Satisfy her fetish
Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but shoes are truly her weakness. And nothing makes a woman's knees falter like a pair of Christian Louboutins (from $645; christianlouboutin.com). With their lipstick-red underside and high-rise profile, these naughty yet nice heels are sure to titillate both of you.
